how to stop browsing porn sites in school?

how to stop browsing porn sites in school?

am 17.10.2004 14:41:52 von vikramasanjeeva

Hi,
I recently had a chance to visit one shool using e-Learning system.
All the kids have got Laptop. They are using educational programs
which needs internet access. The bad thing is that, these kids are
browsing porn sites and using google to find dirty images.
How can school stop this ugly thing? How much sites they can
block? 10,100,1000? Kindly give some suggestion.

Bye,
Viki.

The best solution would be to not let them use the networks unless
under supervision from a teacher. But then, I don't know what you
consider "kids". I don't think this could be an option in a
university or similar.

The other solution is some porn-filtering web-proxy, but I'm afraid
that would lead those creative kids down the path of tunelling and
other attempts to bypass whatever measurements taken. This is not
my area of expertise, so I'll let someone else recommend specific
products.

Both solutions will have an educational effect; the first hopefully
that computers can be a lot more fun than just playing around with
google, the second that they learn to think like a hacker. I'm not
sure which of these effects I'd like the most, but I would suspect
most people to like the first better.

Netnanny and other softwares as of such are too easy to bypass. You would
need something like Websense or IWSS. Much easier to configure to block
such things.

While educating the kids is a nice idea, it won't work - there will
always be kids that violate the acceptable use policy. You can render
most of the porn unaccessible by installing a firewall with web
filtering and by disallowing pages that don't declare their content (at
the firewall level).

If the school is not behind a real firewall appliance, or some form of
Proxy server, they need to be.

WatchGuard makes very nice firewalls that allow administrators to block
14 categories of content, can block for select users on the network,
allow for select users, and do many other things to protect the school
network.

I use one in my home to filter porn and hate content sites from all the
systems, except for one system in the common area of the home (it's open
to anything).

Can you provide a link to/for WatchGuard?

Consider creating an Acceptable Use Policy, installing a web filtering
product (e.g. Zix Web Inspector) and tightening outbound access on the
firewall...

re: Zix Web Inspector

When installed within the network it works like a packet sniffer, monitoring
TCP/IP packets as they're sent across the wire. When it detects a
connection being attempted to a website on its objectionable list it will
immediately block the website and provide the user with a message indicating
why it was blocked. If the website is not listed on objectionable list the
user may be able to retrieve the first page, but this is also when the
product begins spidering the site, looking for content considered
objectionable based upon predefined categories of words which are weighted,
etc. For websites not blocked on the first click the website often becomes
blocked upon the second click and for all subsequent visits.

Note: The categories are customizable and so are the word weights. This way
the product can be finely tuned for the environment it is to be installed
within. Obviously in an educational environment the ability to have this
granularity is a necessity as you would not want to block a website because
the word 'breast' by itself appears.

For those persons who may attempt to circumvent (knowingly or unknowingly)
the blocking of websites by proxying or tunneling their connection. They
too can also be restricted from being to establish these connections.
Additionally the product may also be configured to require the user to
'login' first before they can surf the 'net, thus greeting them with a
message describing the AUP and the fact that network is monitored for
objectionable use, etc.

Further information about Web Inspector may be obtained from

Hi guyz,

This means school has to use some porn-filtering s/w. Now, in my
point of view, there are two techniques,

1) To install porn-filtering s/w on each Laptop
2) porn-filtering web-proxy + with any software.

I am not sure whether above two is right or wrong and whether there
is any 3rd technique?

What about the following s/w?

1) NetNanny
2) Zix Web Inspector
3) Websense
4) WatchGuard
5) Norton Professional Firewall

Which one is better or is there any other better s/w than listed
above?

Looking for ur help!

Bye,
Viki.

Any software you install on a system that the kid can take home can be
subverted. You want to block Porn at the school, you need to filter it
at the school - you need a proxy or firewall that does content / web
filtering. Adding software to their systems means lots of work,
maintenance issues, kids that bypass it, etc... Adding a transparent
appliance means a one-time setup and little maintenance.

Maybe a squid with Dansguardian in the firewall or proxy can help a lot
to block this kind of sites.

You may be able to block everything, except that required by these
programs. That would be the best way to go, and very hard to
circumvent.

Without knowing the network setup its impossible to say which is the most
suitable product.

What do you have currently - To have multiple machines on the network there
must already be some kind of firewall or proxy device ?

Have you got a big budget to spend or do you need something "home made and
cheap" ?

http://www.censornet.com/ is worth a look as is www.surfcontrol.com

What kind of annual subscription fees woudl they be looking at? A lot
of filter makers charge exorbitant subscription fees.

Your 1 choice will be too much to maintain and can be circumvented by
the kids. If I were to do what you wanted, I'll implement a
router/firewall with content filtering. One I've seen that offers this
setup is zyxel in the zywall lines. The content filtering is served by
cerberian and caused $70 a year.

I pay about $975/year for the renewal of service and updates. This
covers support, firmware updates, access/updates to the content
database, and the on-line forum.

First line of attack is to spice up your educational material, so that the
kids would rather spend time on their lessons than on wasting time like
this. Be honest, if you were their age, and if school were not compulsory,
would you really be thrilled to have to study the present lot of lessons on
offer?

Take it as sincere criticism of your e-learning design skills. Get some
good advice about e-learning: it just isn't true that anyone can do it
well.
