IndexIgnore and parent directory

I found this exchange back in December:

For me, commenting out the IndexIgnore line works to get the parent
directory link & icon to display, but I don't understand why, since the
line (in my mod_autoindex-defaults.conf file) reads:

IndexIgnore .?* *~ *# HEADER* RCS CVS *,v *,t

What in here is ignoring ".."?
