Unable to Publish

Unable to Publish

am 04.12.2005 14:01:02 von Mikep

I have just installed Front Page Server Extensions, ver 5, on Solaris 10
running Apache 2.0.55. Everything installed properly.

However, when i attempt to publish to the webserver via Front Page from my
laptop using FrontPage 2003, I get an unable to publish error. It is asif
FrontPage Extensions were not installed properly on the Solaris box.

Any ideas? I am wondering if I built the root web incorrectly during the
install. But when I look in /usr/apache2/htdocs i can see the MS stuff such
as _vti_*. Also, the http.conf file has mod_frontpage.so in it and
mod+frontpage.so exists under the /usr/apache2/modules subdir.

I would greatly apprecate any help. Thank you in advance for your time.
Michael

Any messages in your system log or apache logs for you attempt to
connect?
You might want to check the http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/faq2002dso.htm
page for
additional information.

I tried to Publish to the web server then went and checked the apache
error_log. Here is the content -
[Mon Dec 05 18:24:51 2005 [error] Incorrect permissions on webroot
"/usr/apache2/htdocs/_vti_pvt" and webroot's _vti_pvt direcotry in
FrontPageAlias().

Most of these articles say that the permissions on the web root and _vti_pvt
are different. that is, different user and different group. That is not the
case with me since I did a recursive seting of GUI and UID. ALso, the values
are not too low.

What is interesting is that when I attempt to Publish from Front Page 2003
SP2, I am never asked for the login or password to the webserver to publish.
FP just automaticly tells me that I do not have permission. It seems like it
may be trying to publish to Unix with my Windows ID or something.

Why does FP not ask me for my login or password when publishing. Is there
anyway to force this to happen?

Any ideas?

some more info...,

The error I am getting when I try to Publish from FP is unable to find
webserver.

Yet the web server error_log reflects incorrect permissions. And the
access_log relrects reflects a GET and POST.

Re: Unable to Publish

am 08.12.2005 10:55:03 von Mikep

I think I may have found the problem, I just do not know how to fix it.

The content of _vti_inf.html contains
FPAuthorScriptUrl="_vti__bin/_vti_aut/author.exe"
FPAdminScriptUrl="_vti_bin/_vti_vti_adm/admin.exe"
TPScriptUrl="_vti_bin/owssrv.exe"

However, NONE of these exe's exist on the web server.

Is this the problem and if so, how to create the *.exe files.

- Thx

Hi Mike

All the .exe's are in the tarball and when i installed FP it put them in the
default install directory.
/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0 and below.

/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/exes/_vti_bin and a few other lcoations

Re: Unable to Publish

Thx - I found the *exe in the tar ball and moved them to the proper location
under the webserver ../htdocs/_vti_bin/...

However, I do not have the /shtml.exe/_vti_rpc subdirectory (or file) and I
am still unable to publish.

The error_log is still reporting permissions error on _vti_pvt and the
missing _vti_rpc file

Any ideas?

Odd location as the extensions are normally installed for serverwide use. (i
am no expert but run a few FP servers with full admin access).

on my servers shtml.exe is here
/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/exes/_vti_bin/shtml.exe

i don't have any refs to _vti_rpc, i googled and found this
http://www.rtr.com/fp2000disc/_disc1/00000d2d.htm
but is for the FP2000 extension.

Don't do this, the FrontPage module intercepts these requests and gets them
from
/usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/exes/...............

Okay, I put the exe's back. Thx

Any idea why when I go to publish a login window does not pop up from the
Client and why the web server says there is a permission problem when they
seem to be set correctly.

I don't understand how it can complain about a permission problem via the
web server error log when the client has not even popped up. There is not
client login to compair the server login to.

Is something else configed wrong where the PC thinks it should us my Windows
login or something like that????

What files are here /usr/local/frontpage ?
(ls /usr/local/frontpage)

Do you have lines similar to these in httpd.conf?
LoadModule frontpage_module modules/mod_frontpage.so
LoadModule cgid_module modules/mod_cgid.so
LoadModule cgi_module modules/mod_cgi.so

Did you restart Apache?

Another way of testing is to add a network place in My Network Places.

Yes, there is:
LoadModule speling_module modules/mod_speling.so
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
LoadModule frontpage_module modules/mod_frontpage.so

Can I do this with a Solaris box?
I can ping the url and see the apache test page. Just can't seem to publish
using FP. The client loggin window never pops up and askes me for the
Publish name and password, yet on the server in error_log i get an incorrect
loggin attempt.

Mike,

I don't have Solaris, but are similar lines to these in your conf file
somewhere?

(this might vary)
Options Includes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Allow from from all
Order allow,deny

The My Network Places thing, that is from an XP box that doesn't have the
FrontPage client.
If the login window never pops up, its not working (either with above
method, or FP client).

Try: httpd.conf => UseCanonicalName On

Can you open the administration page from ie?
http://www.mikepallos.com/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmcgi.exe

Tried httpd.conf => UseCanonicalName On, then recycled web server. No change.

When I request page
http://www.mikepallos.com/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmcgi.exe, I get a login
windows. I enter the name and password in the login window and press OK.
The the page gives me a 404 error, page not found. Is that correct?

Try it again and check the web server logs and system messages files.
You should have been able to log in.
