Hi

I am having a problem with installing MySQL 5.0 Community Edition on a
Windows XP Professional laptop.
The install program itself works, but the configuration wizard that comes up
afterwards doesn't.

In the wizard, I choose all the default settings, and everything goes fine
until the very last window, when it's time to "execute" the settings. On
the very last step, "Apply Security Settings", the configuration fails, and
a window pops up that tells me Error 2013: Lost connection to the MySQL
server during query. That is followed by a message telling me to open port
3306 for access on my firewall.

I don't think the firewall is the problem. I have granted MySQL unlimited
inbound and outbound access. I have even tried turning the firewall off,
but the configuration won't even work then. BTW, I use Symantec's Client
Firewall and Antivirus.

I have searched the MySQL documentation and their online forums to little
avail. It seems many other people have this same problem, but no one knows
how to fix it. A few have gotten a working system after un-/re-installing,
but I have done that multiple times with both the essential and the complete
packages, and the configuration still won't work.

I really have no idea what to do now, and I would appreciate any help on
this.

Thanks,

Jimmy

What I said was that everyone seems to be complaining about this problem,
and no one know how to fix it. I can't tell you how many unfinished threads
I've found where people would post this problem, but no one would answer.

RTFM on how to 'manually' setup mysql. It's really not that hard.

I've followed the manual setup instructions, and have mysql installed in
C:\mysql
running mysqld --console gives me what seems to be normal output similar to
that in the manual, but the program freezes on me - it stops responding and
the only thing I can do is force quit the command prompt.

What is happening is not a freeze.

If the server has nothing to log, you will see nothing appear in the
screen. The reason you do not get a prompt back after issuing a mysqld
--console command is precisely because the server *is still running*.
The prompt won't reappear until after you stop the server.

Start a second command prompt and issue the following command to start
an interactive mysql session using the Command Line Interface (the MySQL
CLI)

shell>mysql -u root

To end your session, type

mysql> exit

and you will be back at the command line prompt. To get your server to
stop (and restore interactive access to your first screen) you should
issue the following command:

shell> mysqladmin -u root shutdown

To learn more about the utilities "mysql" and "mysqladmin" please read
the following sections in the manual
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysqladmin.html

and for a walkthough tutorial, please refer to chapter 3
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/connecting-disconnect ing.html

Kindly yours,

Thanks for the help.
There's still a problem though:
I started another command prompt, typed mysql -u root, and it gave me
ERROR 2013 (HY000): Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial
communication packet', system error: 2
If I turn my firewall off, it works though.
The thing is, I don't want to have to turn off my firewall to use mysql. I
have Symantec, and MySQL is in the list of programs to allow. I didn't find
an option to open specific ports.
If anyone has experience with Symantec and knows what to do, that would be
great.

Thanks

Jimmy
