If I put text offscreen but first in my html file, will it cause a problem?

If I put text offscreen but first in my html file, will it cause a problem?

My idea is to try and get googles crawler to read good, useful text
but I don't want it seen in the header, a bit like meta data. [1] So
if I give it a position relative, waaaaaaay off screen like -10000
will it cause any problems?

I've experimented and it's pushing the content of the first div down,
even though it is off screen and positioned at -500 up as well. It's
not online.

...............

Lots of good stuff about the business that google can index but that I
don't really want seen right at the top of the page.

blah...
...............

#put-this-p-off-the-page {
display: inline;
position: relative;
left:-10000px;
top:-500px;
}

Wotdyareckon? Night night.

[1] Yes, I know meta data is dated...

Hi and thanks.

I knew it wasn't an original idea, by far, but it seemed reasonable as
it's being honest about the site, not decietful trying to be one thing
but looking another.

But, I'll ditch that idea.

And http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answe r=66353.

"If your site is perceived to contain hidden text and links that are

will not appear in search results pages. When evaluating your site to
see if it includes hidden text or links, look for anything that's not
easily viewable by visitors of your site. Are any text or links there
solely for search engines rather than visitors?"

And thanks to you too.

Although I am not going to try this now, I think the important word
there is "deceptive". If I have a paragraph that correctly describes
my site which is intended for search engines, what is actually *wrong*
with that? If I had designed my site better, too late for that today,
then I would have that paragraph in the right place. But I haven't so
I'm stuck with whatever garbage they happen to pick up.

With billions of individaul web pages out there it's impossible to
select the deceptive from the not, so I understand thier stance.

I'm in the middle of a grovelling process after the big G removed my site
for (I assume) similar infractions. They're no slouches when it comes to
monitoring any naughtiness with your AdSense ads either.

For SEO, there's a group alt.internet.search-engines which is very useful.

Site's looking great BTW. Shame to lose the silly photo!
