Backing up *everything*

Backing up *everything*

Hi all,

I am creating the backup documentation for the web farm at work. All
servers are IIS6 on W2K3 Enteprise Edition 64bit.
I understand 99% of the backup process, there is just one part I need
help on hence this post!

How can I backup all/any web services that the dev team install on the
server? i.e. If they write a .NET app that runs as a web service, i
need to include it in the backup.
The reason I ask is because I assume that restoring the whole server
with ntbackup, then then metabase will not be enough to restore an
installed web app.

Hope someone can help!,
Hugh

Hello,

How do they install it? Are the changes that is done as part of the
installation included in any backup?

I am sorry i cannot give you a prompt answer, but i don't know the
requirements of your custom built applications. In general, all you need to
do to "install" a web service is to copy the appropriate files to a folder
on the web server. Maybe you also need to change something in the metabase
(which you say is already part of the backup schedule). But i cannot tell if
your applications are the same, they may have custom requirements i don't
know about.

I would recommend you to find out the requirements and see if you cover it.
Then make up a backup rule, inform the developers, and if they decide to
change something that is not part of the backup process, they either need to
inform you about it or else it may be lost in case of disaster.
