#1: ODBC download problems

Maybe you can help me out. I am having trouble using the MySQL ODBC Driver=
=20
3.51.

I am using Windows Vista 64 bit home premium.

I went to your website last night to download the odbc and downloaded the=
=20
mysql-connector-odbc-noinstall-3.51.27-winx64 drivers and tried to install=
=20
them. When I unzip the files and click on the install.bat file a window=20
pops up for less than 1 second and then disappears. I still can not see th=
e=20
odbc drivers anywhere on my pc.

I went to the forums to try to get help and was directed to this page:
http://mysql.oss.eznetsols.org/Downloads/Connector-ODBC/3.51 /

I clicked on this download and ran the wizard which seemed to work fine
mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.27-win32.msi

However, after I ran the wizard I didn't see any new programs or the driver=
s=20
still.

I apologize, but I am not that experienced with MySQL or it's products.

Bottom line is that I am trying to install the MySQL ODBC 3.51 driver on my=
=20
home pc but am not having any luck doing so.

I would appreciate any help that you can give to me.

Thank you,

Ryan

Using 32 bit Vista for Business launch the 'ODBC Database administrator' from
Control Panel by clicking ODBC then click 'Add' under 'User DSN' select MySQL
driver and follow wizard.

Remember ODBC is microsoft product running mysql_odbc_install just adds a new
driver for use in the 'ODBC Database administrator'

Mark,

I actually have Vista 64 bit Home Premium. I went to the ODBC Database
administrator and clicked Add under User DSN but did not have anything
listed for a MySQL driver. I had MS ODBC for Oracle and SQL server but not
MySQL.

I may just be missing something. I am not that technically savy, so I
apologize if that is the case.

I really appreciate any feedback you could give to me.

Thank you,

Forget to CC the list.

Have you searched your machine for ODBC related files?

I installed mysql-connector-odbc-5.1.5-win32.msi a few months ago on Win XP.
(The version you installed seems pretty old)

Have a look here for more recent drivers:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/5.1.html

Sorry I can't remember the details but I think if there was no error on install,
then the files should be on your system somewhere.

Do a find and also try looking in C:\Program Files\MySQL\Connector ODBC 3.5 or
similar.

Hope this helps,

Ian

Ian, I don't have a Connector ODBC 3.5 directory or anything similar in the
mySQL directory under Program Files.

I did a search, but couldn't find the driver either.

Is there any other way that you can think of to get the driver? My webhost
only has the MySQL 3.51 driver available and does not have the newer
version.

I had it installed on my old computer, is there anyway to transfer it to my
new computer?

Thank you for the help.

Lawson,

I appreciate the help.

I had the driver installed on my old PC is there anything I can do to
transfer it and all the necessary files and registry over to my new pc?

Do you have any other ideas?

I don't know how else to connect to the mySQL database that I have on my web

version.

I would appreciate any help you could offer.

Thank you,

Sorry, I can't advise you on that. I've never done it, but I would guess that a
fresh install would be much safer. I have no idea where files from the installer
get put.

#9: RE: ODBC download problems

Posted on 2009-10-14 06:23:59 by Lawson Cronlund

Ryan,

My recollections are getting a little bit clearer.

I was never able to get the 3.51 ODBC driver working. I had the same
problem that you describe (install and no driver in the ODBC list). There
was a solution to that which involved some registry manipulation if I recall
correctly. However even after that the ODBC driver didn't seem to operate
properly. I was puzzled because other people seemed to get it working but
there were a lot of problem reports at that time.

As I said, I gave up and used an OCX for direct connection to the database.

However, there is a later version of the ODBC driver with both 32 and 64 bit
drivers for windows. Here's the URL for the 64 bit driver:

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/5.1.html#winx6 4

I don't know if there are compatibility issues between the 5.1 version and
whatever MySQL version you're running.

Hope this helps,

Ian,

I was able to access the link, and I ran through everything, but I was still
not able to have any success.

Is this a Vista problem, 64 bit problem etc.?

Thanks,

Ryan

Lawson,

I appreciate the reply.

I am not even sure what an OCX is.

Thank you for all the help.

I've only been half-following this but Vista 64 bit does not work immediate=
ly with MySQL ODBC data sources. You have to do this to get it to work:

The ODBC drivers don't go into a dedicated directory of their own. On Windows
Vista, the file is C:\Windows\system32\myodbc5.dll.

If your host won't install the version 5, I believe you are stuck.

Did you say what your client application is? Perl, PHP, and others have native
access methods that don't require ODBC.

#15: RE: ODBC download problems

Ryan,

An OCX is an object that can be included by reference in a compilation of
the source code of a program that you are developing. Also called ActiveX.

This would only apply if you are developing a program - e.g. VB, C, etc.
The only one I was able to find is for VB6 (Visual Basic version 6) which
was the language I was developing my database application in.

The OCX I used was very old and has no support. I've heard of no others
being available.

Here's a link for all the MySQL Connectors/ODBC drivers:

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/5.1.html

Both the 3.51 and the 5.1 ODBC drivers are available for Windows x32. Only
version 5.1 is available for Windows x64. I'm not sure which operating
system you're using so you should pick and install the appropriate one. I
would suggest that you use version 5.1 but there might be compatibility
issues with whatever the application is that you're using. In general you
should use the MSI installer version.

Lawson,

I appreciate the reply.

Since it doesn't seem like I am going to get the ODBC driver working, could
you please give me some advice on how I can use an OCX for direct connection

to the database?

I am not even sure what an OCX is.

Thank you for all the help.

Ryan

#16: Re: ODBC download problems

Posted on 2009-10-15 05:08:43 by rhunter

Hello,

SUCCESS!!!!

I really appreciate all of the support and feedback from everyone. It has
made a very frustrating situation a little easier.

I finally think (fingers crossed) that I got it to work on my local host
machine.

Here's what I did:
- I went to the mysql site here:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/3.51.html
- Instead of using the Windowsx64 downloads link I used the Windows download
link and selected the MSI installer. I downloaded the file.
- I then went to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory and found the odbcad32
application. (You can not see any of this from the control panel)
- I opened the application and went to the System DSN tab and clicked on
Add.
- In the list I saw the ODBC 3.51 driver for MySQL and configured the
connection.
- I am in the process of testing everything out, but it appears at first
glance that it has worked successfully.

Thank you so much for everyone's feedback and advice. This will save me a
couple of headaches.

I also wanted to answer some additional questions that were asked from
everyone.

I am using ASP.net files (ASPX)

I use a VB language.

One thing that I have thought about is that the need for the ODBC driver is
on my home PC (development machine) and not the host. When my aspx files
are published on the host they work fine because the host obviously has the
3.51 drivers. However, on the development machine I could not get them to
run from a local host perspective because I did not have the 3.51 driver
installed (Hopefully I do now). My old development machine was running a 32
bit version of Windows XP, my new machine is using a 64 bit version of
Windows Vista. If I wasn't able to get it to work I think I might be able
to do some work arounds.

I don't see the driver in this directory here:
C:\Windows\system32\myodbc5.dll

Once again, thank you so much for all of the help.

I will send everyone a confirmation to let you know if everything appears
correct.

Thank you,

Ryan
