WLAN adapter recommendations?

Hello everybody,
I finally talked my parents into getting DSL. =) However, it looks pretty
much like the DSL modem is going to reside in the basement of our house to
provide internet access to me (my computer is located in the 2nd story of the
house) and my father (whose machine is in the first story).
Since we are not willing to put cables all over the house, we are thinking of
getting a hardware-router/firewall (no, we do *not* have a spare 486-machine
standing around...) with WLAN. In Germany - where I live - these thingies are
getting very popular, and they mostly come with WLAN-adapters that connect to
USB. (Well, I assume it's "real" WLAN, not some proprietary protocol.)
I do however strongly assume these thingies don't work with Linux too well.
So I consider getting a "regular" WLAN-adapter (PCI/ISA). And I want to make
sure it works fine with Linux (and, if possible, Free/NetBSD, as well).
So I'm asking you if you can recommend any WLAN-adapters, preferrably based
on your own experience.
Any comments will be appreciated, thanks in advance and kind regards,
Benjamin Walkenhorst
