DBD::mysql for x86_64

Compile fails, whether using cpan or the tarball DBD-mysql-2.9004_2.tgz
with this error:
make: *** [dbdimp.o] Error 1
The system is SUSE Linux 8.0 Enterprise Server - Linux linux
2.4.21-231-smp #1 SMP Mon Jun 28 14:13:46 UTC 2004 x86_64 unknown.
Perl is 5.8.0. Both DBI and DBI::DBD are installed. only DBD::mysql fails.
Any ideas?

0. Does 2.9003 work?
1. can you send me the full output of the make.
2. Does the build work if you pass --nocatchstderr to Makefile.PL
3. Also could you run the link command by hand and send me the exit code which
should be in $? (assuming bash)
