Cannot publish from remote server to local PC

Cannot publish from remote server to local PC

Hi there, I have the UNIX FP extensions (v5.0.2.2634) installed on a
RH9 (Apache 2.X) server here, and one of my clients is having some
trouble with publishing.

He recently had to reinstall his laptop, so now he needs to fetch a
copy of his live web site back to his local machine. He is using the FP
publishing wizard (FP 2003 - fresh installation on his laptop) and
selecting a local folder on his machine as the destination web. The
process seems to start successfully, but as the FP client is publishing
files to the local machine, it hangs on a certain file. After a timeout
of 5 minutes, he gets an error popup box with a message that there was
an internal server error (HTTP 500 code).

I have checked in the logs on the server, and all I see is this:

Apache access log:

XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX - - [25/Dec/2004:16:00:10 -0500] "GET /_vti_inf.html

[Sat Dec 25 16:15:39 2004] [error] [client XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX] no
acceptable variant: /var/www/error/HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR.html.var

This server has been working fine for months and months when he has
been publishing from his laptop to the remote site, but the other
direction is what's causing problems now.

One other thing to note is that I tried the same process with my laptop
using the FP 2000 client, and it works fine. Can anyone think of what
could be causing this problem?

Thank you,
Greg Larkin

I would have him make sure the new local folder he created is an "empty web."
In other words, have him browse to the new folder in FrontPage, right click and select Convert to
web.
Then close it, open the server version and then try publishing to the local.

Hi Steve,

He is still getting the same error message, even after trying that
suggestion. Do you have any other idea what it could be? He has even
deleted a bunch of files off of the remote server to minimize the size
of the download, but that doesn't seem to help.

I should mention that he is attempting to publish a ~50Mb web to his
local PC through a dialup line. Could there be some problem with the
number of files or the stability of the connection? It does seem like
there is some problem on the server end. I'm getting to the point
where I'll have to "strace" the Apache process to see what's happening
at the system call level, I think.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Greg

That's kind of a stumper. !!

As a work around so he can get his site to his machine:
Have him open it in Internet Explorer in ftp mode ftp://websitename.com he should be prompted for
user name and password.
After he logs in, have him browse to the public_html folder, right click on it and drag it to his
desktop, release the mouse and then select "Copy here."

When done he can rename the public_html folder, and he "should" have a workable copy on his machine.

This can also be done via My Network Places, but it's more time consuming because it has to be done
folder by folder / file by file.
