Setup of IIS on Windows XP sp1

Setup of IIS on Windows XP sp1

am 31.12.2004 20:19:13 von Agustin Cesar

Hi guys, well, I already post this question in Windows Xp Networking and
Web, but didn't knew about this news group :P. Anyways, I just want to
know if there are guides about setting up an IIS server on Windows Xp
for static web pages, like:
picture gallery
information site
dumb stuff for my kids, they want to setup a site for the dog lol...

The picture gallery is my idea, because I like photography, but the main
problem is the space, my isp only gives me 5Mb, so I thought, why not
setting up a server for myself at home. I got a small file server, with
Windows Xp Sp1 and the IIS already installed, I got Front PAge 2003 in a
laptop, right now making the web page, but the questions are:

how do I upload the information?
how do I get the IIS working?

Thanks for the help.

You can use FrontPage Extensions (There's a newsgroup/forum for those
as well...) or you could use FTP, copy across netowrk shares, put the
files on a floppy, basically any way you can get the files to the web
root for your site.

>how do I get the IIS working?

How do you know it isn't?

You install IIS, and it's there and working. Test it from the server
by typing in your broser:

http://localhost/

Test it from the remote systm by using the server's name or IP address
instead of "localhost". Let us know if that doesn't work and tell us
the full error message if you get one.

Well, I kinda messed up witht the configuration, because I downloaded the
lock down tool and now I don't know what do to. IT gives me this error:

Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

And well, I am unable to post my web using front page :/

Also, there are some other stuff but, first, how can I get the IIS resetted
to the default, all of it.? reinstalling?

[UPDATE] I reinstalled and everything now works in the default way :)

I could copy the files using the Front Page Remote Site utility, and it
load up just the way I like, also found out of the sub-sites thing,
pretty neat to manage different sites under a main one.

But there is something that bothers me, why when I hit "publish" it tell
me that the server is disk based? even though using the "copy" function
of the Front Page I can upload all just fine? glitch? or some cable
loose? Or copying is the right way?

Rerun the lockdown tool to undo the changes. Then look at:

URLScan:
http://microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/techn et/security/tools/tools/urlscan.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;3182 90
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;3079 76
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;8178 07
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;3258 64

Is directory listing denied on the virtual directory? By default it
normally is, check the properties on the directory in the IIs MMC.

For FrontPage publishing, check the FrontPage group. And make sure
you installed the FrontPage Extensions and extended them to the web.
