Malformed packet

I suspect many of you have seen this error ... the message is:
System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [HY000] [MySQL][ODBC 3.51
Driver][mysqld-4.1.5-gamma-nt]Malformed packet

When that error started happening, it was very consistent and kept
happening. Nothing seems to justify such an error: the error was related to
a statement ran many times in the past, on the same table (new rows have
been added, but no changes in structure). Only that one table was causing
the error, all other tables were fine.

As soon as I stopped the MySQL service and restarted it, the error
disapeared and has not reapeared since.

What's going on? Is this a known MySQL 4.1.5 bug?
