Hi,
I'm compiling the 2.6.3 kernel to run on my suse 8.2 laptop. A lot of things
start to work now, but I've got several services that does not run, such as
ssh, cups, etc. The problem is that syslog does not start too. I believe that
it could be a network problem, but it appears ok, since the loopback
interface is rightly configured. What can be the problem?

I'm attaching my .config file.

Thanks,
Luca

It says that syslog should be running on my runlevel (5):
syslog 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on
6:off

but at the boot syslog says it cannot start.
Any idea?

'chkconfig --list syslog'.

: but at the boot syslog says it cannot start.

it looks like you're booting into "X", and logging doesn't start
until you hit runlevel '5' where 'X' lives.

i would suggest you try:

"chkconfig --level 234 syslog on"

then:

"telinit 1"

on RH, it offers two options. the first is for system maintenance,
and the second is 'normal startup'. use the latter (^D) and see what
happens ...

Re: syslog does not start

try starting syslog by hand in debugging mode
and capture/tee

/sbin/syslogd -d | tee syslog_debug.out

(will pipe output to screen and the file syslog_debug.out)

You may be able to deciper the problem from the debugging,
otherwise post the output here and maybe we can help from there.

Mabe I'm misuderstanding the file produced as syslog output, but it see=
ms ok=20
if I run it manually. So what can be that produces syslog to fail durin=
g=20
startup? I've checked my startup scripts and simply invoke syslog witho=

strange flags, so I'm quite confused.

this is just a guess. above you are sending 'syslogd' output to
vt10. my inittab vt's entry look like this:

"9:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty9"

RH ships with a default of 6 vt(s), so i had to add the rest. you will
note that each vt is tied to 'mingetty'. if you don't have an entry in
'inittab' for the tenth vt, it seems to me that 'syslogd' output is goi=
ng
to hang at "mingetty's" target.

like i said , just a guess ...

VTs are created on demand. If syslog opens /dev/tty10, the
corresponding VT will be created if it doesn't already exist. If
/dev/tty10 is being used for syslog, /etc/inittab *shouldn't* be
running a getty on it (whilst doing so won't interfere with syslog's
operation, you probably wouldn't actually want to log in on a terminal
which is going to have syslog output dumped onto it, so there's no
point running a getty on it).

No, this is ok. You don=B4t need an entry in inittab to redirect output=
to=20
some ttys.

I have lost the focus to your problem. As I know you said
syslogd starts fine if started manually, but it fails to start
right after reboot, isn=B4t it?
If all your runscripts are ok - and I think they are - it looks
like something isn=B4t up right after reboot - like some modules aso.
Can you give the output from /var/log/dmesg or /var/log/boot*, if it
is a current RH dist.
If you have booted a new kernel, and the problem appears right after th=
is,
you=B4ve changed something in the .config file or the kernel is bad.

Here there's my dmesg output. However I cannot understand, since it seems a=
s I=20
can start services (such as syslog) after the system has booted, but not=20
during boot.
Any idea?
