I'm using MySQL Administrator to manage MySQL which I'm relatively new at as
well. When I start up the server as the root user and try to set up
privileges for other users, the changes don't seem to be sticking. Even if
I go in and look at my global privileges as the root user, both the assigned
and available privilege columns are empty. When I check the schema or
database privileges for another user, I can see all of the available
privileges and can move them to the assigned column. When I click "Apply
changes", the phrase "Fetching user data." appears for a flash in the
taskbar but the changes don't seem to take. The assigned privileges column
remains empty.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Peter

Power of the net, searching for 'root "lost password" mysql':
http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/171366
At this thread you can find how to skip the privileges table and reset
your root password.
After the reset, try accessing MySQL Administrator again and see if it
solved your problem.
Hope that helps,
