it's a corrupted file, maybe during the download process. try to get at the
http://dev.mysql.com the zipped version.

Thanks for a sound suggestion.

The MD5 sum correspond the indicated, so there has been
nothing wrong with the dowload processes.

I realized a blunder of mine - while uninstalling the 4.1.7
version I have forgot that the installation wizard created a
my.ini file in the Windows directory, that hindered saving a
new my.ini file there. However, deleting it did not remove
the original obstacle, the nine items in the registries.

Now the installation has gone through; unfortunately I have
to configure it manually. It is so late that I have to let
it to tomorrow.
