A curious question ...

Currently, Gmail accounts are only available by invitations
sent by existing users of Gmail.

But how did the first users of Gmail get their accounts
if there were no existing users before them to send invitations?

They were offered to users of one particular blogging site and also to
google employees and probably some other selected groups.
