Hi,

Several weeks ago I installed Mysql 4.1. A week ago, for some reason it
didn't work anymore. I downloaded the recomended version again and tryed to
install it. The installation works, but the configuration stalls.

The wizard completes following items: Prepare configuration, Write
configuration file.

The wizard stops at 'Start service' and displays the message: 'Cannot create
Windows service for MySQL.Error: 0'.

Can you help me te solve this problem. I already tried to stop the service
manualy (it worked), I unistalled Mysql twice. I even deleted al the
registry-keys, still I cannot complete the configuration wizard.

I'm a beginning web develloper and my intention was to use Mysql in
combination with PHP.

My operating sysem is Windows XP

Thank you for looking into my problem

You said that you uninstalled the program, but did you delete the
C:\Windows\mysql.ini file?

The uninstaller doesn't... That could be the source of your problems.

Just a thought.

maybe the mysql-daemon didn't/can't shutdown properly.

first try a manual shutdown by entering "net stop mysql" in the =
cmd-line.
then, take a look into the taskmanager's process-tab. if you still can =
see the server-process (mysqld[...].exe), shut it down (end process) and =
try the setup again.

Odds are the service is still present from the old install. You can
wither try 'sc delete mysql' at the command line, or try a tool I wrote
for removing MySQL services on Windows at
http://www.openwin.org/mike/faq/faq.php/error-cannot-create- windows-service-for-mysql-error-0/

Could also be this :

(WinXP built-in firewall blocking)

otherwise, consult the other posts in the thread...
