Hi All,
I'm having some odd problems with my server. About once a week, it =
seems to stop responding to all queries, or taking a very long time to =
respond. (an hour or more.)
Under normal circumstances, it is processing about 85-100 queries per =
second, without any real problems.
When it plays up, it accepts connections OK, but all queries seem to =
hang.
Attempting to restart the service results in CPU utlisation going to =
100% and staying there. The process dies and nobody can connect any =
more, but Wndows doesn't accept that the service has stopped. The only =
solution is to reboot the machine.
Using version 4.0.15 on a P4 with 1GB of RAM.
Anybody seen this kind of behaviour before?

Regards,
Leigh

Unlikely. As far as I'm aware, there is only one index on any given table.

You can try to stop all processes which update your databases and connecto
to mysql server manualy and run some "OPTIMIZE TABLE ..."
Are you using MyISAM or InnoDB?

I optimize all tables weekly.
I also did a myisamchk -r -n on all tables recently. Made no difference.

The log does have some entries indicating bad blocks on the disk.
It doesn't coincide with the server problems, but looks like it's worth
investigating.

Sounds like a memory leak problem which always requires a reboot - look =
for a process that whose usage you have increased.=20

Look to processes on home brewed software * yours or something you out =
sourced

May not be MySql but your server side scripting or even your antivirus or =
backup software (we were just down that road).

Re: Server not responding

am 13.04.2005 16:14:52 von Daniel da Veiga

You should start your server with --log-warnings and take a look at
the warnings page, maybe you're gettings lots of hanged connections
(it happened to me once), take a look at your thread config, maybe
you're running too much threads at once without disconnecting (this
would be related to warnings comming from the options I mentioned
before). Are you using NTFS? I noticed some problems related to
indexes and queries with LIMIT on systems using the
lower_case_table_names option and NTFS (winxp), I eliminated each one
(LIMIT, lower case, of course could not remove the NTFS) and it worked
much better. Take a look at the memory usage for the server.

As Jerry stated, lots of connections means lots of threads, that use
lots of space and eventually disk, Apache even creates a single file
for each session started, so, there are lots of disk access, and a
antivirus would block, check and then resume each one.

This looks more like an OS config than a MySQL one, because you stated
you had it running for some time, any system changes (hardware,
software)?

saludos desde panama!!!
well.. you should backup all the mysql databases, and change that hard
disk immediately..
this is pretty much the cause of the failure..
good luck!!

Hi All,
Thanks for you responses. At this stage it looks like it's actually a
hardware issue. Windows is telling me I've got errors on one of my disks.
This is the most likely cause of the problem, it seems.
