white & black addess list storage

Are there any standard storage systems used for handling white & black email
address lists? I want to find something generic that I could use accross
different applications. For example similar to the way they use DNS to
create IP black lists. I was thinking something along the lines of LDAP.
Anyone see anything like this used before?
