MySQL 4.0.12 install problem on Mac OS X 10.2.5

Dear Sir or Madam,

I installed the MySQL 4.0.12 binary package onto an
Apple Power Macintosh running OS X 10.2.5 (not OS X
server), and am able to launch the server and run the
"mysqladmin version" command succcessfully. However,
"mysql -u root test" returns the following error:

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost'
(Using password: NO)

I looked through section 4.2.11 Causes of Access
denied Errors in the manual, but none of the cases
seemed to apply to this exact error, and adding a
user.MYD or root.MYD in /usr/local/mysql/var/mysql/
didn't help anything.

Please let me know what else I need to install or
configure to get MySQL 4.0.12 working properly on OS
X.

This is not a fully repeatable bug report, but an issue fully
described in our manual.
