Random errors 0x800A01FB "An exception occurred" while connecting to MySQL 4.1.11 from ASP

We have random errors 0x800A01FB "An exception occurred" while connecting to
a MySQL 4.1.11 server from ASP via MyODBC 3.51.11/MDAC 02.81.1117.0
(operating system is Windows XP Pro). The connection is made to "localhost"
- probably not a real network issue, then...

The same code works fine, and from time to time (I haven't seen any specific
frequency in errors), it issues the error 0x800A01FB "An exception
occurred".

I have seen many threads in this mailing list - but they're all outdated
(2002, 2003) and refer to old versions of the MyODBC Driver and/or MDAC:

Is this an old bug coming back to life? How do I debug/track/solve this kind
of errors?
