PROBLEM INSTALLING MYODBC 3.5

Hi! I have been having problem with getting connection to mysql server
through ODBC. I thought that the ODBC driver version might be an issue,
so I tried to installed MyODBC 3.5.. but even that is not getting
installed.. I get following error when configuring...

> MySQL CONFIGURATION - CLIENT LIBS AND HEADERS
> checking if building of thread safe library is enabled... yes
> checking for mysql_real_query... no
> configure: error: Could not find compile MySQL single user test
program. Please check config.log for errors

did anyone face this problem .. any remedies...

is there any good ways to install all these...what really screws is the
ambigous error messages .. they should atleast explanatery enough to
give some hint .. what really is going wrong.
