BtInternet

The above recently brought in authentication for outgoing mail, but it
does not work with Thunderbird. The e-mail help has told me, on
different occasions, to select SSL under "Outgoing server" and not to
select it. If I try to use another server it just connects with
smtp.btinternet.com anyway. I have deleted Outlook. I can still
receive mail without authentication. Ideas anyone?

What kind of authentication method have they introduced? If it's SMTP
after POP (ie the system needs you to log in to the POP server before
sending mail), it isn't available as part of the core solution in
Thunderbird, although there is at least one plugin available to provide
this functionality. There are bug reports on Thunderbird on this issue
going back to around 2001, but nobody seems to be in any hurry to fix
it.
If you don't get an answer from here, you may want to check out the
forums at Mozilla itself (
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=39 ). They're usually
pretty helpful.

When I click "Get mail" it actually logs into the SMTP server without
authentication and downloads the mail. I'm not sure why it does that
but that's what it says on the taskbar. Only if I try to post does it
demand authentication. Thanks for the tip.

Thunderbird works well for me on smtp.mail.yahoo.co.jp, which requires
authentication. I assume that it would work with smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com as
well.
I know that SBC-Y (smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com) requires that I use the complete
email address: . If you already have the server
set up, check its properties; make sure that you have the correct port
specified. I use port 587 with smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com, but port 25 should
work. SMTP server configurations are accessed through Tools|Account
Settings...|Outgoing Server(SMTP); use the "Advanced..." button.

Thanks, but I've tried all that. I'm convinced that the problem is with
the ISP.
