Domain names and e-mail
am 04.07.2005 07:18:43 von Buddy
Say, I currently have the domain names www.example.com and
www.example.org registered. I only recently registered www.example.org.
www.example.org merely redirects traffic to www.example.com.
What is the status of e-mail sent to me at www.example.org. For
instance, I currently receive e-mail at me@example.com. What happens if
someone accidentally sends me an e-mail at me@example.org? Is there any
easy way I can receive mail at both addresses (me@example.com, and
me@example.org)?
What would be the best/easiest/most inexpensive way to receive e-mail
at both addresses. Is there an easy way to 'forward' e-mails or
something like that?
Thanks in advance. Any input would be appreciated.

You could have ALL e-mail sent to example.org forwarded to a certain
address at example.com pretty cheaply, I would imagine -- check the
company that forwards the web traffic for example.org (but note that you
can use different companies for dealing with web and e-mail for the same
domain).
To have a one-to-one mapping (i.e. me@example.org and you@example.org both forward to the corresponding addresses @example.com) might be a
little more involved, but again, check with the company that hosts
example.org first.

This heavily depends on how you are currently operating the domains.
In general, the so called DNS MX entry defines which servers! handle
mail for a given domain. So it's no problem to create two MX entries
for the two domains pointing to the same host. From there on it
depends on said hosts configuration.
To deal with this situation you have two options
a) have your ISP deal with all this
b) run your own mailserver
If you are interested in option b) you may want to take a look at our
embedded e-mail server ( www.nct-technology.com ) which allows you to
do all this for just $560 and is a top notch centralized spam filter
solution at the same time. Note, this is hardware AND software, there
are no running fees, almost no energy consumption (hence no costs) no
heat generated, no noise, so pefectly suited to be used in an office.
