There is no reason given and I have no idea why it will not start. I cannot
go into the mysql/bin/ folder and start the DB there either.

I tried changing the mysql folder name and then downloading a newer version
of mysql but I could not install it as it would quit as I was configuring
it.

I am running mysql-essential-4.1.10-win32 on a XP Professional box it ran
for about three months and then died.

Can anyone help me?"

I still cannot get it running, is there a way to restore my PC to a time
when it did run?

Warren, check the logs to see more details about the problem. The MySQL log
is in the mysql/data directory (it should be an .err file)

A good way to go back is to backup the data directory completely, or
have an sql backup, download the zipped version, unzip it without
replacing your "data" directory and use it. Make sure there are no
imcompatibility of versions.

If you previously installed using default names, you can do a "net
stop mysql", then a "mysqld --remove" to remove the service, use the
zipped version and do a "mysqld --install" and a "net start mysql" to
install and start it...

Good luck,
