error question

I have been getting this error when trying to compile some cpan modules:

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: [...] Error 1

When doing MIME-Base64, HTML-Parser, as well as others.

No, I'm not root. I'd like to routinely do these installs into my home
directory.
