Thanks for your response.
I used phpMyAdmin and exported the database from the Linux server - then
the dump was loaded into the Windows server via phpMyAdmin again. All
tables have their indices correctly defined (well phpmyAdmin says so and
I beleive it!) Slowness is from all activities - reading data is very
slow as well. The tables are all pretty small - the biggest has 7,400
rows ... the Windows server is a brand new dedicated server and the
Windows defrag utility says the data drive does not need defragging (
the database is the only thing on the data drive)

Is the PHP application on a server in the same server farm or is it in a
different building/location? Also are you using the Windows Server's IP
address or domain name. I'd try the IP address instead of domain name.

Also have you checked the bandwidth or your new server? Try downloading
a file from the server with the PHP application and seeing what bit rate
you get on the download...

Hi Jeremy
Yes PHP is running on a clustered web server in the same machine room.
The DB server is isolated from the Internet and is only accessible via a
private IP address. The PHP app already connects via an IP address to
the database server. The network bandwidth has been checked by the
sysadmin and he gave it a clean bill of health.
