GNU Perl

OOPS! I messed up my GNU cygnus port of perl by changing my start up
directory in the .bat file
created.

I tried for hours to renistall it with no success. It kept crashing. I could
use my NT Perl book, but
maybe I am better off getting a newer version of perl (my NT book is about 8
years old)

You just thought the world was interested, or was there some question you
never got around to asking?

verion of "perl"

How old a version Cygnus are we talking about? Cygnus became Cygwin when Red
Hat saw it as an opportunity to leech some money a few years ago. If you
still have an old version (B##), I would first recommend upgrading before
trying to repair. If you're already running a newer version, perhaps try
using the setup.exe program again to re-install perl.

Since I can't run perl I don't know what version it is.

I do not know why it is failing to setup. It keeps popping up an error
messege saying the program hasn't unzipped or untarred -- whatever message
of a certain file.
I tried this about 3 times end eventually the setup program crashed.

I suppose my Windows XP could have changed because updates, and that might
causing the problem but that realy doesn't help me.

Thanks anyway! I am still looking at at.

I think it is a B# version of the so called cygnus port. If that is what you
be version. (Not the perl version.

In that case, I would strongly recommend upgrading to cygwin. It's much more
reliable under XP, for one.

If that's not an option, and it sounds like you have the source for perl
with your cygnus distribution, try building it from the command line rather
than going through the setup utility. The setup utility is just a
convenience, so if it's bugging out there should be nothing stopping you
from doing things the old-fashioned way. If your setup program is bugging
out because you've buggered up your installation so badly, however, you may
have no choice but to upgrade.

You may also want to consider finding a group that deal with cygnus/cygwin
and see if anyone there has any better ideas.

There's also ActiveState's Perl, which is a very Windows
friendly Perl port:

ActivePerl won't run natively under cygwin:

http://cygutils.fruitbat.org/perl-contrib/index.html

The other problem is that he's using an old version of cygwin, so it's
unlikely that the above tools would even work.

I download a new version of perl.

I don't know how to update to cygwin. I liked the cygwin port, but it is
not necessary.

I you aware about what Sir Conan Doyle thought about the Molly Maguire. (He
thought it was a terrorist organization even if I do have a soft spot for it
because I am part irish).

I liked cygwin, but I don't need to run under it. I have a CD with another
port, but I didn't use the install for it, so perl didn't work right. The
cygwin was working, but I don't need it because Active perl works. Thanks
anyway.
