MySQL Server Crash

Our MySQL Server 4.1.8nt crashed yesterday running on Windows 2000 =
Server. I am trying to diagnose the reason why. I noticed that just =
after restarting the MySQL service yesterday that the following was =
logged to the Event Viewer by MySQL:

Event Source: MySQL
Event Category: None
Event ID: 100

I could not find any reference to "max_open_files" in the MySQL manual. =
Anyone know what this message means?
