MyODBC-5 status update?
am 30.09.2005 02:03:53 von Daniel Kasak
July was the last status update that I know of. I take it things are
slipping as there have been no further snapshot releases after the
initial v5 release. Any chance of another status update, perhaps with
more details as to what will be supported?
eg:
- fetching result sets from a stored procedure?
- client support - MS Access?
It's just nice to know where we stand ... it helps in planning.

We are just getting a few small things done with a new 3.51 release and
then our focus will return to v5. I would hope that a new v5 release
will be made in 1-2 weeks from now.

I hate to be pushy, but your above statement about another MyODBC v5
release in 1-2 weeks was made in May last year!
I am at a point where I can simply no longer wait indefinitely for
stored procedure support.
Can you please give MyODBC users an update - even if it's just "There
will be no v5 release in the foreseeable future".

Are you looking at stored procedure support to execute the stored
procedure or to get catalog information on it?

We want to pass some variables into a stored procedure and fetch a
result set.

Dan, you should be able to do that now (v3.51.12). What problems are you
having? What platform - XP (win32)? Can you provide us with a self
contained C source example which shows any error?
We are putting together a v3.51.13 release - do you mind if we send you
it for a quick test before we make it public - just to be sure any
problem you have in this regard is solved in 3.51.13.

ODBC--call failed

Windows 2000 sp4 & all updates ( minus that damned update that prevents
me from relinking MySQL tables in Access ).
Access 2002 with all services packs.
MyODBC-3.51.12
> Can you provide us with a self contained C source example which shows

C? Afraid not.
Here's what I've done:
In mysql:
CREATE PROCEDURE `who_is_a_fish`()
BEGIN
select 'I am a fish!' as Answer;
END
Now, from the mysql command-line client, I can do:
mysql> call who_is_a_fish();
+--------------+
| Answer |
+--------------+
| I am a fish! |
+--------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
However when I put:
call who_is_a_fish()
into an Access pass-through query and run it, it simply says "ODBC--call
failed". I can change the SQL to something like:
select * from some_view
... where 'some_view' is the name of a view in the same database - THIS
works - ie I can select from views. But I can't call stored procedures.

Please try the 3.51.13 you find in here;
ftp://ftp.mysql.com/pub/mysql/hidden/connectors/odbc/
You will want to uninstall existing c/odbc (myodbc) and ensure *myodbc*
is removed from system32 - before installing 3.51.13.
If it fails then please provide an ODBC trace.
Thanks

Peter,
Would there be a chance on some kind of Changelog? Even if you can direct m=

to some sort of list where I can find bits and pieces of the changes I woul=

be happy... I am still looking for that multirow support for SP's...

I get the following error on installing:
---
*
MySQL Connector/ODBC 3.51 Installer Information*
Error 1918.Error installing ODBC driver MySQL ODBC 5.51 Driver, ODBC
error 13: Could not load the setup or translator library. Verify that
the file MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver exists and that you can access it.
[ Abort ] [ Retry ] [ Ignore ]
---
Strangely enough, hitting 'Ignore' allows the installation to complete,
giving me a functioning ( I can at least open tables from Access )
driver. I've done a *little* testing, running pass-through and 'normal'
queries from Access.
I cannot, however, execute my 'Fish' stored procedure from Access:
CREATE PROCEDURE `who_is_a_fish`()
BEGIN
select 'I am a fish!' as Answer;
END
I still get:
ODBC--call failed
Also, I can't configure ODBC connections with this driver ( to enable
tracing ). I get:
*Microsoft ODBC Administrator*
The setup routines for the MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver ODBC driver could not
be loaded due to system error code 126.
Lastly, enabling logging on the previous ( 3.51.12-2 ) has no effect for
me. There is a tool-tip ( this is from memory at the moment ) that says
that the log should go to C:/some_log_file.log ... I looked there
previously and found nothing.
Enabling system-wide ODBC tracing does, however, produce a log file.
I've attached the generated log.

Barging in here... you have the same problem that is stopping me at
the moment. It's due to the fact that MySQL expects an extra option in
the mysql_real_connect call to be able to fetch result sets at once
(see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/c-api-multiple-querie s.html).
This is in your logfile:
| MSACCESS 3c4-c4 EXIT SQLExecDirectW with return code -1
(SQL_ERROR)
| HSTMT 07D01CD8
| WCHAR * 0x0012C938 [ -3] "call who_is_a_fish();\ =
0"
| SDWORD -3
|
| DIAG [S1T00] [MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver][mysqld-5.0.18-log]PROCEDURE
| NUS.who_is_a_fish can't return a result set in the given
context (1312)
Now, according to Peter, this should have been fixed long ago in
3.51.12-x. But you and me are experiencing quite the opposite. Perhaps
this is a pointer to the problem:

Just an update on this version - MS Access is now crashing about 30% of
the time when I close it. It started this morning with the MyODBC update.
It gives a cryptic error about not being able to 'write' some memory
location ( quotes included in the error message ). It also gives a
particular memory location that it's having a problem with - this
changes each time.

I really like the initiative - allowing volunteers from the
community to give feedback before the actual release.
I just tested 3.51.13 with bug 14639.
It's still there :-(.
Bug 14639 was introduced in 3.51.12.
Possibly as a side effect of changing the MySQL
version that MyODBC is compiled against.
Any chance that you guys can fix this before the impending release?
