Hello!
I extracted and installed the
mysql-standard-4.0.17-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz
according to INSTALL-BINARY. Then I started the daemon and I
wanted
to set the db password. I get this response:

>[root@h68-144-46-247 etc]# mysqld_safe -user=mysql &
>[1] 4233
>[root@h68-144-46-247 etc]# [root@h68-144-46-247 bin]#
mysqladmin -u root >password my_password
>mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
>error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' >(2)' Check that mysqld is
running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
>exists!

I found out that there is no "mysql.sock" file in my
"/var/lib/mysql/".
What should I do?
Thank you.

Hi!

To this mailing list we only accept full repeatable bug reports
as defined in the MySQL manual.

A complete bug report is done in the following manner:

1) First check the reference manual and the mail archive !
We try very hard to keep the manual up to date so most questions
can usually be solved by looking it up.

Write in the mail that you have checked the reference manual and
mail archive so others know that you have tried to solve the
problem yourself.

2) ALWAYS use mysqlbug when posting questions about a MySQL version
you are using! mysqlbug is for bug reports AND questions.

3) Send the bug report to the right mailing list.
(See http://www.mysql.com/documentation/lists.html). If you are unsure
you should use mysql@lists.mysql.com

4) Include a full example for the problem, including a full test case
with all responses/error messages.

The above problem you describe is some error in your installation
procedure.

Sincerely,
