I built MySQL form BitKeeper trees with using BUILD directory scripts.
"By default" I use BUILD/compile-pentium-debug-max as I am mostly interested in
debugging Bugs test cases and testing other problems. But I also have no
problems with BUILD/compile-pentium and BUILD/compile-pentium-max
I encourage you to clone BitKeeper tree if you are interested in building from
source. It will help you to stay tuned with current development in each tree.

For production usage I highly recommend you to stay away from source and use
only binaries we provide.
Note that I am saying this regardless of the fact that I am "old styler Unix
user". I prefer installing from source. Consider it with the fact that I use
RedHat for several years since RH 4.0 and all subsequent RedHat's :)
