Email hosting vs Domain Name Help?

Email hosting vs Domain Name Help?

am 20.10.2005 02:08:05 von Fred

Anyone.

I want to register a domain name and likely do that independently of any
kind of mail or web hosting service. So I go to someone like Network
Solutions and pay for a subscription for the rights to a domain like
myname@com. Let's say I'm ONLY interested in emails sent to
.....@myname.com.
I have no interest in a website www.myname.com nor ftp ftp.myname.com etc.
Also let's assume that I currently have both MSN and Comcast email accounts
that have no relation to myname.com.

Is it possible to set things up such that all mail sent to ...@myname.com
ends up on either my Comcast or MSN email account? Is it only possible for
specific emails to specific-name@myname.com to be forwarded to my specific
email account at MSN or Comcast??
How does one go about anything like this? What are the features and
services called? How does one get there from here for the least dollars but
from reliable and reputable sources? Can it be done with only a Network
Solutions domain name subscription or does one require an intermediate email
company to do the forwarding?

Thanks.

Can't speak for others, I simply make the necessary settings for my mail
server to process.

Forward account.
Forward alias.

aha - the 64 penny question. If you're asking for a recommendation for a
mail only account then my 2p is on http://gradwell.com - however any host
should be able to provide those facilities. There are many to chose from.

Dunno anything about N/S or their product/service range.

http://www.namecheap.com/
Should do what you want at reasonable cost.

Network Solutions. Just read the warnings and complaints.

I normally wouldn't recommend Yahoo but they are currently running
some specials on domain names and are very reliable. If Yahoo's
current specials are not right for you there are hundreds to choose
from offering cheap domain registration with email.

I would suggest that you *don't* do that. There are some spammers that,
say, send mail to:

a@example.com
aa@example.com
aaa@example.com
aaaa@example.com
aaaaa@example.com
aaaaaa@example.com
aaaaaaa@example.com
aaaaaaaa@example.com
ab@example.com
aba@example.com
abaa@example.com
...etc...

Do you really want a thousand copies of the same message?

Best to only set up a few forwarding accounts:

fred@example.com
freds_dog@example.com

and let the other addresses bounce.

You can register your domain, then transfert it to zoneedit (
www.zoneedit.com ). For what you want this will not cost you a single
cent (apart from the domain registration fees of course).

If you want to run your own mailserver for cheap, take a look at
www.nct-technology.com By using this device you can have virtually as
many mail accounts and domains you like, have it under the control of
your home with no running costs and since the device consumes only 3W
of electric power it costs you less than an electric shaver... Needles
to say that the device offers these services also with internet
connections using dynamic IP.

My research has found the optimal solution for $35 per year from an
unchallengeable supplier.

I prefer my supplier. 100 POP3 e-mail accounts, Spamassisin filtering
(fully configurable), unlimited e-mail forwarders, filters, and
autoresponders and 1Gb storage. It's more expensive at $48 per year
though.
