Hello,

I am having problems reinstalling mysql on my windows 2003 server
(service pack 1 and updated patches).

I was developing a software using visual basic with mysql 5.0.15. Then
when I updated to windows 2003 service pack 1, whenever I ran the
software in visual basic (F5), it would hang. So I decided to update
windows 2003 through windows update. Then I uninstalled mysql 5.0.15 and
then deleted the mysql server 5.0 folder. After that, I installed mysql
5.0.16, but when it comes to the apply security settings part (instance
configuration) the configuration would hang. I uninstalled mysql 5.0.16
and tried to install the former version mysql 5.0.15 but the instance
configuration would still hang.

hope somebody knows the solution to this problem.

Thanks,

Michael Louie Loria

You'll have to post the error, else we can only guess what's going on.
Likely your system kept some configuration file (my.ini) or data
directory from previous installation, the wizard (I hate the MySQL
Configuration Wizard) tries to connect using the root user and no
password, so, if it can't do that, it hangs.

That's why I think its the issue with configuration, your server may
require a user and/or password in order for you to connect.
I would advice you to:

1) Backup what you need (VERY IMPORTANT!!!).
2) Uninstall, delete the folders.
3) Search for my*.* from the C:\ drive so you can find any leftover.
4) Delete the .msi that you use to install and download the no-install
version so you can unzip and use it, wizards hide you much of what you
should know in order to install, setup and mantain a MySQL server.
