Spam Database

Hey guys,

I'm actually looking to take on an interesting new personal project:
a comprehensive spam database. I haven't quite figured out what this
will acheive in the long run, but my programming life has been kind of
dull lately and I'm in the mood to process large amounts of data.
The idea, I guess, is to create an email address that will be
bombarded with spam (which I've done already--sdbase@lysurge.net), and
then create a program to process these emails and a database to hold
all the data. I'm really just trying to feel you guys out for ideas on
what sorts of data to include in the database (should I go as far as
to, say, perform a WHOIS on the sender's domain and a traceroute, etc?)
and good places to really subscribe to a lot of spam. Any ideas?
I'd actually ask you guys to help out and subscribe this email to
spam, but realized that may be a bad idea because I might get accused
of asking you to subscribe an email address that may not be mine to
loads of spam... so instead, I'm just looking for ideas and thoughts.

Btw, this isn't really a serious project.. just something I thought I'd
do to kill some time. I know it's a weird idea.

Thanks,

Burak

There are already a lot of spam databases. Why don't you create a
database of near-spam, that is the stuff that comes from "marketing
partners"? Visit a few porn/2nd mortgage/pharm sites and leave the trap
address, then sit back and wait for the flood. It isn't spam, but it is
unwanted.

I have no idea if such messages come from legitimate MTAs, or have the
same sources as spam. I don't even know if the messages are the same as
true spam messages. If the latter, you could build a DNSBL out of the
result which would be effective at stopping spam. If the former perhaps
it would aid the DCC, or could be used to build a complementary list
with less good mail in it.

If one leaves an address, one IS asking for it.

s/an/one\'s/

Also, it might be interesting to see how an address provided to one entity
for one purpose would be used for other purposes and/or by other entitites.

s/an/ones/ for third-person attributive.

I've been doing that for years already with several disposable addresses.

The point I was attempting to communicate is that leaving an address cannot
be considered opt-in, unless the confirmation loop is also completed.

Yes, of course any honourable person would expect the same, but let's not
forget that spammers are on the other end.
