Unix MySQL driver issue

Hi, can anyone help in this matter. I would really appreciate this.

I am a first time user and have installed MySQL 3.51 on Unix server but
having trouble to connect to MySQL database. Can any one share, how can
I test connectivity from Unix server i.e. what command to use, where to
go & configure odbc file etc.
