Connector Install Freezes

Sorry if this is rehashing something you have discussed before, but I need a
hand.

I have recently installed MySQL 5.0.16-nt and want to have ODBC access.

I tried installing with MyODBC-standard-3.51.8-win.exe,
mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.12-win32.msi, and
mysql-connector-odbc-5.0.0-alpha-win32.msi. All of them quickly reach about
85 percent completion according to the progress bar and then stop.
Eventually a dialog box appears saying that the installer is no longer
responding, do I want to retry or cancel. Cancel is the only thing that
seems to work.
