Sounds logical. anti-virus software will also slow down newsreader
downloads if you're pulling a lot. It might be worth it to set the
anti-virus software to ignore MySQL, but some might consider that a no-no.

Hi all,
I have a perl app using MySQL which seems to be running a bit slow. On =
another site, discussing another problem, unrelated to MySQL, I saw a =
discussion about how anti-virus programs can slow down apps which do a =
lot of file opening/closing because they examine each file as it is =
opened or closed. This prompted me to wonder if this could be the reason =
for my speed issues. I have about 750+ tables, most of which are being =
read or written to about every 30 seconds.
Would anybody care to share their thoughts on the impact that antivirus =
programs might have on MySQL? Does it sound reasonable that resident =
protection will slow down the database server? Does MySQL actually keep =
files open or does it open and close them regularly? What anti-virus =
programs are known to cause/not cause problems?

There was a discussion about that a few months ago here at the list,
check the archives. My personal experience is that AV software as well
as any other resident program that monitor disk/network access will
slow down apps that make use of this services, and making it ignore
(or trust as some AV programs say) that app makes it run faster.

But that should not be a problem if you have a fast system, and there
are many other stuff to check, disk fragmentation, unoptimized
settings. There is a lot of info about the way MySQL works at the
manual, along with lots of tips and hints on optimized settings for a
faster server.

we use X via SSH or TELNET and found to be caught in the same situation
as anti virus software has to check also the TCP/IP traffic.

I forgot the numbers, but the through-put loss was so substancial that
we do not use anti virus software on Windows clients anymore while they
are running as X workstations.

MySQL uses also TCP/IP for communication.
