psqlODBC future development

psqlODBC future development

We have recently created a new branch of psqlODBC in CVS, based on the
07.03.0209 release of the driver. This branch contains a highly modified
version of the driver developed by Hiroshi Inoue (who used to lead
psqlODBC development) and Hiroshi Saito. This version of the driver has
also been ported to use libpq to provide functionality such as Kerberos
and SSL support, however it has been done so in an entirely different
way to the current driver that doesn't break features like Updateable
Cursors. The downside is that the driver still implements most of the
wire protocol itself, so it doesn't have the future-proofing that the
official driver does. There are additional bug fixes in this branch,
some which are in -HEAD, and some which aren't, and vice-versa.

Luf, Anoop, Siva and myself have been looking at this version of the
driver and attempting to evaluate which branch of the code is the most
viable to base future versions of psqlODBC on. We are currently leaning
towards the new branch and are consequently working with Hiroshi and
Hiroshi to resolve some build issues before producing a demo version. I
will announce this when it's available, at which point please download
and test the code and provide any constructive feedback you can. We will
use the resulting discussion to decide which version of the driver to
concentrate our future efforts on.

If anyone would like to take a peek at the code in the meantime, it can
be found in CVS on the REL-07_03_ENHANCED branch

Regards, Dave
