SMTP auth works from Linux, not from Windows

SMTP auth works from Linux, not from Windows

am 24.01.2006 22:56:49 von colonel

I have a Debian mail server running Exim 4, with plaintext password
authentication for incoming SMTP.

A user with a laptop running RedHat has no trouble authenticating.
Users with Windows XP laptops can't get in. They get an error message
about getting no response from the server.

Any suggestions?

Yes.

One: are the people with XP have anti-virus program that proxies their
email to provide anti-virus functionality?
two: did you do any troubleshooting with said users?

Thanks for the suggestion! Disabling the Norton Antivirus did not help.
Even from Linux, though the mail goes through, it often takes about half
a minute. I wonder whether it is hunting for the right port.

I have Exim set to use 25 for SMTP, with 26 available for TLS authentication.

I could just reinstall Exim and hope for better service.

There should not be a need to reinstall the mail service on the server.
What rules do you have on your server? That could be what
introduces the delay (during server processing of the email message
based on the rules) when the mailing is large, the time it takes to
process the message might exceed the idle timeout set in the email client.
