the driver never appears in the Administrator
the driver never appears in the Administrator
am 09.02.2006 00:36:09 von Paul Wilson
Hi:
I have tried various installation methods for MyODBC, and the driver never
appears in the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator. For instance, if
I choose:
System DSN -> Add ...
then I can still select the SQL Server driver and the Mocrosoft ODBC for
Oracle driver, but there is no MyODBC or MySQL driver. As the result, I
can not set up an ODBC datasource for a MySQL database.
I have tried installing both the 3.51.12 and 2.50.39 versions of MyODBC,
starting with these .zip files:
mysql-connector-odbc-3.51.12-win32.zip
myodbc-2.50.39-win95.zip
In each case, the installation seems to complete successfully, but no
MyODBC driver appears in the Administrator. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks,
Paul

Hello.
What´s version of windows are you using?
If you are using a windows nt family OS (nt, 2000, xp etc) be sure that you are installing
logged as a user with administrative rigths.
I think i had a problem like this in the past. And that was the problem.
Just a suggestion.
Bye

Paul,
Hopefully, by now, someone has responded with the specific procedure =
which I
don't remember right now.
I had the same problem using WinXP. The solution involves deleting =
certain
keys from the registry so that the ODBC logic rebuilds the driver =
database.
After that, the ODBC driver shows up in the driver list. Apparently, =
the
driver is installed properly but not flagged for the ODBC console =
plug-in to
show it.
I wish I could remember where I found the solution. I'll research it
further and, if I find it, re-post for you.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Hi, Lawson:
Thank you very much for the excellent information. I am sure that the
problem has to do with the registry. At the end of the day yesterday, I
noticed that the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver
key had some REG_SZ entries with invalid names. Instead of an APILevel
entry, for instance, there was an entry named \ (backslash).
I tried putting entries into the key that corresponded to entries for other
keys (for Microsoft ODBC for Oracle, for instance), but this did not solve
the problem. The driver still does not appear in the Administrator.
It would be very kind of you to take a quick look for the solution, if you
have time. I will keep looking, of course, and now that I know what I am
looking for, I may be more likely to find it.
Thanks again,
Paul

Hi, Ricardo:
Thank you for your excellent suggestion. Fortunately, I have
administrative rights on the PC. You're right, of course -- if I had not
had those rights, the installation would have failed in a very similar way.
Thanks again,
Paul

Paul,
I found it. It was actually where it should be - in the MysQLODBC =
directory
of my MySQL archive/download files.
Here's the text of my note on this which I got from the MySQL ODBC list =
(I'm
pretty sure that was the source). This worked for me. I think I did a
restart after following the instructions - just in case.
============ ODBCDriverAbsenceCorrection.txt =
==================== ===3D
If, after you install MyODBC, you cannot find the MySQL ODBC driver =
listed
in the Windows=20
ODBC Manager, the following registry change may be needed.
As always, when changing the registry, make a backup copy prior to any
changes and=20
be prepared to restore the registry from the backup.
1. Select the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\ODBC Drivers
2. Delete the (Default) key.
Note that the key does not actually delete. The value changes to
"(value not set)".
3. Restart the computer.
4. Display the installed drivers in the ODBC manager.
You should see the MySQL driver installed now.

====================
You might want to investigate the direct interface packages such as
VBMySQLDirect (for MS Visual Basic) or the other language packages for =
other
languages. I found this to be a better solution for my application =
since I
had trouble with the ODBC package. There are rumors that a much, much
better than new ODBC package is going to arrive in the near (or far?) =
future
but I haven't seen anything that identifies when yet.
Regards.

RE: the driver never appears in the Administrator

Hi, Lawson:
That worked perfectly. The driver appeared in the Administrator, and I was
able to create and test ODBC datasources. Thank you!
I will be very interested to try interface packages for MySQL other than
ODBC. For instance, I have already made sure that I can do everything my
applications need to do in the database using Java and JDBC.
Wherever I have worked, the big preferences have been to connect to
databases using ODBC and JDBC. Therefore, I need to check out MyODBC and
find out whether it enables me to do at least the minimum that my
applications have to do.
Thank you again, Lawson. I was just about ready to throw in the towel.
