Can McAfee Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm peacefully co-exist ?
Can McAfee Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm peacefully co-exist ?
am 03.03.2006 09:21:58 von wylbur37
On a Windows Me system, is it OK to have McAfee Personal Firewall and
Zone Alarm (free) both running at the same time?
I know they're probably mutually redundant, but if they can peacefully
co-exist, it's easier to leave them both on instead of removing one of
them.
If it turns out that they shouldn't co-exist, which do you recommend
keeping?

Personally, I'd avoid running either of them! - both are known as resource
hogs (especially in Win9x systems)

It does not make sense. It does even not make sense to have one of them,
because with Windows ME, you just can unbind any network service (with
the exception of TCP/IP) from your outside interface, and you will not
need a "Personal Firewall" at all.

I wouldn't run either McAvee or Norton myself. They both hog your machine
and are not as effective or user friendly as several free AV progs (AVG for
example)

The question was in respect of Firewalls, not AV's (but I wouldn't run
Norton anyhow)

The only thing that could happen is what they call a double FW situation
that could prevent inbound packets from reaching the computer. I had
that happen to me with having BlackIce and XP's FW active at the same
time, which prevented syslog packets boradcasted to the machine running
Wallwatcher by the router. The packets were being blocked. I disable the
XP FW and the problem was corrected. If you're not experiencing that
kind of situation, then run them both.

there is no reason to do this as resources will be reduced greatly. if its a
matter of 'lack of confidence' of one or the other, get sygate 5.6(symantec
hasn't ruined it , YET, but there are no more updates) and be done with it.
Do I think its perfect? No, what is?, but it has a pretty small footprint
compared to those two. 'Tiny FW' is another good choice, which I am trying
out currently.

Huh?
The OP's talking about firewalls... Where did Norton and the subject of AV
programs come from?
It's been suggested that simultaneous firewalls *not* be run.

Sygate has bad security design flaws.

Tiny "Personal Firewall" was the only "Personal Firewall" in our test,
which did not filter anything as the default configuration. It's just
unusable for the average home user. And it has bad security design flaws.
