UNIX Mail "Fetcher"

UNIX Mail "Fetcher"

am 29.03.2006 23:14:21 von Alex Allan

Hello group,

I'm running a FreeBSD system at home which acts as a file server and
mail server. We also pay for some mail boxes and web site. At the
moment, e-mail goes to our mail provider then is forwarded to this home
system. The idea is that all e-mails that are received are archived and
users can then manage their mailboxes however they want.

I'm finding this setup a little bloated and insecure for the job that's
doing. It's also a problem when the internet connection goes down or
the server is turned off. I'd prefer to have a program that connects
our provider's POP3 server, downloads messages that it hasn't seen
before and then disconnects.

Can anyone recommend one?

Cheers,

Alex

That's what fetchmail is for: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fetchmail

With the negative effect that the envelope gets lost :-(

That's not fetchmail's fault. The envelope gets lost because of the entire
boneheaded setup that involves an intermediate mailbox. By the time
fetchmail enters the picture, the envelope is already gone.

You are correct.

It's the fact that the mail already was delivered when fetchmail starts.
