Is there a generic, database based, searchable (and cross platform)
tool for archiving emails?
All tools that I have found state "Exchange" or "Lotus" and seem
proprietary to the 3rd company.

procmail combined with a search engine like swish-e, perhaps? If you need
company-wide archiving, then you can use a milter like MIMEDefang to bcc an
archiving alias and have procmail take care of the archiving.
