Lock and slow server

Hi,
I=92m having a strange behaviour with my mySQL server (version 4.0.22).
Sometimes some lock happened, and while it happens the entire server =
appears
to be locked.=20
All my applications freeze during the 2-5 seconds of the lock and =
restart as
if nothing happened as soon as the lock is gone.
I though the lock was locking only the table, not the server.=20
Can you explain to me what may be causing this ?
