domain name resolution
am 06.05.2006 00:08:36 von cody
Right now I have a domain crystalbox.org with an MX record which points to
crystalbox.no-ip.org. This is one of those free dynamic hostnames. However I've
noticed that when people try to send me mail at crystalbox.org, some messages
get the domain switched to crystalbox.no-ip.org, example sendmail logs follow.
Correct:
May 5 10:44:34 crystalbox sm-mta[4548]: k45FiXn4004548:
from=, size=1599, class=0, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<200605051644.22739.catwheezel@operamail.com>, proto=SMTP, daemon=MTA,
relay=pop5-1.us4.outblaze.com [205.158.62.125]
May 5 10:44:34 crystalbox sm-mta[4556]: k45FiXn4004548:
to=, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=local,
pri=31812, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent
Incorrect:

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

No.
crystalbox.org does not own an MX record, but it does own a CNAME
record pointing to crystalbox.no-ip.org. The CNAME record is
what's causing some mailservers to rewrite the domain in the RCPT
TO:
FYI, since crystalbox.org is a delegated domain name, and therefor
must own NS and SOA records (at least), it is not allowed to also
own a CNAME record. This is a "CNAME and other data" error (if a
name is an alias for another name, it can't also have records of
its own), and any nameserver that publishes such invalid data is
severely broken.
Apparently, ns3 and ns4.secureserver.net are running broken DNS
software that happily publishes rubish if that's what it's fed.
If you have control of the DNS records, you should replace:
crystalbox.org. CNAME crystalbox.no-ip.org.
with
crystalbox.org. MX 10 crystalbox.no-ip.org.
www.crystalbox.org. CNAME crystalbox.no-ip.org.
If you don't have control, you should pick a new DNS provider with
more clue.

This is a MIME GnuPG-signed message. If you see this text, it means that
your E-mail or Usenet software does not support MIME signed messages.
The Internet standard for MIME PGP messages, RFC 2015, was published in 1996.
To open this message correctly you will need to install E-mail or Usenet
software that supports modern Internet standards.

No, you don't.
You have a crystalbox.org CNAME record for crystalbox.no-ip.org. You also
have acrystalbox.no-ip.org MX record for itself, but that's not the same
thing.

Some mail servers replace domains with CNAME records by domains the CNAME
records point to, and some don't.
That's what you're seeing.

No you don't. You have:
crystalbox.org. 3555 IN CNAME crystalbox.no-ip.org.
