Mail forward to sub domain?
Mail forward to sub domain?
am 02.06.2006 11:33:18 von David Segall
I use ZoneEdit to forward web requests for a small, state based,
organisation. Requests to wa.myorg.org are redirected to the ISP used
by the WA branch. I would like to redirect mail in a similar manner
but ZoneEdit will not accept a redirect in the form
treasurer@wa.myorg.org. Can this be done, preferably at no charge, by
some other domain name manager? A mailserver for the organisation is
not a viable option.

What mail setup is at your ISP? sendmail, postfix, exim, qmail? What
configuration options are available to you?

Basically none. Each state branch uses a different ISP and individual
office bearers have their own. I want to forward email addressed to,
say, treasurer@wa.myorg.org to earnest@hotmail.com. The organisation
does not have, and cannot have, its own mail server. The only
configurations that I have access to are the domain name registrar and
the domain name manager (DNS registrar).

Dave,
You seem to have a mail server that handles the "myorg.org" domain.
If the ISP offers you no options, the only way to achieve what you are
trying to do is to setup your own pair of mail servers that would handle
the xx.myorg.org. All these will then need to do is have an alias map
of the email addresses to the estination addresses.
The stating point is to determine what capabilities are available to you
with the existing mail service. you could always direct an MX for
*.myorg.org to your existing mail server. Then again depending on the
option you might be able to determine the original designated recipient
and take an alternate action and forward/redirect the mailing to a
different address.
Another option is to get an external email service provider that would
cover your needs.

Alas, no. Myorg does not even have an ISP. It only has a virtual
existence as a registered domain name and a DNS provider (ZoneEdit).
ZoneEdit can satisfy any request for a domain or a subdomain with a
user defined destination. I can specify that a request for
http://myorg.org is redirected to your home page at excite.com because
we are using your free site as our home site. If you also maintain the
site for our WA branch I can redirect http://wa.myorg.org to an
individual page on your site. If you were the national treasurer of
Myorg, ZoneEdit would allow me to redirect all mail addressed to
treasurer@myorg.org to akxxxxxxx@excite.com. I would also like to
redirect mail addressed to the WA state treasurer
(treasurer@wa.myorg.org) to you but ZoneEdit won't let me do that. I
was hoping there was another way.
I'm surprised that so few small organisations and individuals use this
redirection facility. It provides a reasonably convincing web presence
for the insignificant cost of domain registration.

The web page redirect via dns or via a URL redirect is not as resource
intensive as email handling/forwarding/storing is. Whether the mail
server delivers the email locally or redirects it outbound, processing
is still involved.
Your remedy is obtain a email only service which will accomodate your
needs. Many hosting companies will likely have an email only solution
where they would handle email only.

You are quite right. That led me to wonder how ZoneEdit provided their
current service. Webmaster Toolkit
told me that
ZoneEdit used their own mail server. I guess I should ask them for the
extended service but it does indicate that another DNS provider might
already provide it.

Not really sure whether you have an answer to your questions. Or
whether you are looking for some additional information.

Thanks AK. I think I now know that I require a properly configured
mail server but I think a DNS provider is the only hope of getting
one. Myorg cannot run their own mail server or pay someone else to run
it for them.

I used to use www.mydomain.com for redirecting mail on my own domains.
Just sign up for an account and see what they can do. For less than $10
you could even buy a domain name just to play with. Then with half a
dozen gmail accounts, you could test what you want to do. As far as I
remember, it will do what you want to do.
