Problem changing root password
am 21.06.2006 06:58:16 von Asif Lodhi
hi All,
When I try to change root user-password from the shell using ANY of
the methods described in the reference manual, it says that the USERS
table is read-only. My root password is blank and it's giving me
creeps. There MUST be a way to change the root password. I am using
the stable recommended release - 5.0.22-community-debug.
Any hints?

I presume it lets you login OK as root with the blank password?
Is there any other reason the USERS table might be read-only, e.g. the
O/S permissions or file attributes?
Something like copying the install files from a CDROM might leave them
read-only, which could cause this problem.
