IIS 6 authentication problem

Have a Windows 2003 SP1 server with Virtual Server 2005 R2 installed. Have
the problem, that Windows Authentication doesn't work at all when connecting
to the Virtual Server Administration Website: Getting Error 500 - internal
Server error. When configuring the site with "Basic Authentication", the
site works, but prompts for User-ID and Password when launching the
Administration Website and when connecting to every machine.
Have also fullfilled all the requirements for Windows authentication
described in KB article 258063.
Have then downloaded "Authentication and Access Control Diagnostics 1.0"
from Microsoft and getting the following errors when performing Kerberos
diagnostics:
- AppPool not started
- Wrong credentials for AppPool Identity
Has anyone an idea what both error messages mean, how to correct them, or
how to solve this problem? Thank you all in advance for any help!

If you haven't already, I'd look at the application pool properties under the
"Identity" tab. Sounds like your pools aren't starting because of the acct
specified there.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, everything there seems to be ok
and identical with another running IIS: Under "Application Pools" is only
one item named "DefaultAppPool" and the IIS Admin MMC says that it is
running. Under "identity" in the DefaultAppPool is "Network service"
(predefined entry) specified, like on another running IIS.
