[OT] Happy day! Agent V4.0 can block subthreads.
[OT] Happy day! Agent V4.0 can block subthreads.

I have used the Agent news reader since it
was first released as Free Agent and I did request this feature but I
don't have any other connection with them. I'm sure regulars in this
group appreciate its value and know exactly where to "pinpoint" their
filter.
From the Agent 4.0 release notes:
"Ignore Subthread
In previous versions of Agent you could ignore an entire thread. In
this case Agent would retrieve the message headers in the thread but
mark them all read. Now you can select a message anywhere in a message
thread and ignore that message and any messages that are part of the
response thread to that message. In other words, you can now ignore
subthreads , not just entire message threads. Message filters that use
the Ignore option can be pinpointed to specific subthreads."

Does that mean I have missed out on a news reader that could do that
6.75 years ago? If so, which one? Actually, I would be interested to
hear of any other news reader that can ignore a subthread because I
don't like some of the other "enhancements" to Agent.

I hope that Mr. "KB"'s newsreader can indeed do what he thinks/claims
it can.
To answer your question: I don't know which other newsreaders can do
this, but to do this with any level of reliability, the newsreader has
to have a particular feature which Agent and Mr. "KB"'s newsreader have,
but many/most others, including mine, don't. What that feature is, is
left as an exercise for the reader.

xnews can. What I would like it to be able to do and it can't to my
knowledge, is ignore any post by a specific person and any response to that
post. You have to mark each thread or subthread as ignored.

You'd better check if that's really true. Most likely Xnews will *try*
to block subthreads, but in order to do it *reliably*, it has to store
('old') headers or/and reload them, and AFAIK it doesn't do that.

If the poster has a specific "tag" (unique pattern) in hir
Message-IDs, then most newsreader, including Xnews, can do that. If you
want to follow this up, then please read/browse/post to *the* newsreader
group, news.software.readers (where this should have been posted in the
first place).
